Bio

Alan Peck | Woodturner & Artist For Alan Peck, making has never been a hobby so much as a way of seeing the world. He began drawing and building as a child, found his way into the woodshop in junior high, and has spent a lifetime pursuing what he calls the “Elegant Solution”—the place where thoughtful design, skilled hands, and the character of the material come together. Today, Alan works across woodturning, painting, and film photography, with a particular devotion to natural-edge bowls and hollow forms. His process often begins long before the lathe: with a tree, a chainsaw, and a piece of wood whose final form has yet to reveal itself. From there, each piece moves through a careful series of stages until the final application of beeswax and oil. For Alan, the magic happens in the moment when the form hidden within the wood begins to emerge. Just as important is where the wood comes from. Alan sources his material from urban environments—sometimes only blocks from his home—giving new purpose to wood that might otherwise become mulch or simply be left to decay. Rather than forcing uniformity onto the material, he works in conversation with it: part intention, part discovery, allowing grain, bark, knots, edges, and unexpected imperfections to become part of the story. Perfection isn’t the goal. Alan describes perfection and control as illusions. Instead, he continues refining his craft—searching for greater balance and harmony in his forms, more precise cuts, and new ways to pass the knowledge along through teaching. It’s an approach that feels particularly at home at Juniper + Fire: respect the material, honor the hand, and let each piece remain unmistakably its own.
